How to Select the Right Skin Care (Avoid Common Skin Care Mistakes!)

How to Select the Right Skin Care (Avoid Common Skin Care Mistakes!)

One of the most frequently asked questions I get is “how do I know the right skin care products for my [insert skin type or condition here]?” Never fear! I’ll help you conquer the confusion, and if you still have questions, leave them in the comments. First, an important lesson in Skin Care 101: Be honest about your skin type and condition. Avoid selecting products for imaginary skin conditions or issues. We can be very critical of ourselves, and this can prevent us from making an honest assessment of our skin. Selecting an incorrect product for a nonexistent condition (or one that is not as critical as you might think) can actually result in a skin condition. For example, don’t run out and buy a strong glycolic acid serum made specifically for those with mature and sun damaged skin if your skin has only been around for 21 years and you have a few freckles. That is not mature, sun damaged skin. See the difference? I’ll give you an example of something I see an awful lot: someone gets a small breakout caused by stress or a bout of questionable food choices. The person then freaks out and treats the breakout with harsh, drying acne treatments. The skin becomes dry and sensitive, which compromises skin barrier function and sends the skin into protection mode. Translation: redness, inflammation, and excess oil production. The result? A cycle of dryness, sensitivity, and more breakouts. The solution from the very beginning would have been to use hydrating, moisturizing treatments that speed healing, reduce inflammation, and protect the skin from damage. So instead of “attacking” the issue, change your mindset to...
My Skin Care Routine for Clear, Radiant Skin (Plus Makeup!)

My Skin Care Routine for Clear, Radiant Skin (Plus Makeup!)

My skin care routine changes often due to all the lovely skin care products I am sent for review, and while so many of them are beautifully formulated, they are better suited to other skin types or concerns. Thus I am fiercely loyal to the rare gems that come across my desk, and they are the products that are most effective for me and that I come back to consistently. Over the years and with much trial and error, I have put together a skin care routine that suits my skin perfectly. It has given me clear and radiant skin, even while I was on long-haul flights and eating food that my body hasn’t experienced in years (chocolate-injected croissant, anyone?). Sure I get the occasional pimple, but the overall quality of my skin is due in part to this simple and stellar routine. HOW TO GET GREAT RESULTS: Remember that what works for my skin may not work for yours. Experiment, but give products a solid chance to work. It can take about 2–4 weeks for the skin to become acclimated to a new skin care product. Lightening or correcting skin care treatments require about 12 weeks to properly evaluate the results. Check out my new skin care guides for product suggestions for each skin type and skin concern. If you don’t spot your skin type or concern, leave a comment on this post so I can add it. Most of the links below will take you to my new curated collection shop, Epic Beauty Bar. I was getting a ton of requests to provide a shop where all my...
How to Prevent a Travel Breakout

How to Prevent a Travel Breakout

My recent trip to Japan meant that I was on a plane for roughly 26 hours in one week, and I did a sub-par job of taking care of my skin while I was up in the sky, which resulted in an unusual breakout. Live and learn. This is my skin care travel plan that I will be implementing when I head out to New Zealand in August. Why We Breakout When We Travel Now, not everyone gets a breakout when they partake in a long haul flight. However, I did notice everyone’s skin (I pay attention to skin everywhere I go – force of habit) while disembarking from our nonstop flight from LAX to Tokyo. And what I noticed that everyone’s skin was in one of three conditions: A bit inflamed and red Flaky Super shiny With the exception of the stewardesses, who were popping into the bathroom with their big cosmetic bags every hour, everyone looked rough. The reason is really because of the air. It’s very dry, and the lack of humidity causes different reactions in different skin types. Dry skin gets super dry and a little pink (or even red and inflamed) and perhaps even flaky. Combination and oily skin gets even oilier and shinier. My skin is combination and reacted by gifting me with a ridiculously oily forehead, yet normal and balanced skin everywhere else. So if we can prevent the arid environment from screwing with our skin, we will experience pleasant, balanced skin for the duration of our trip. How to Prevent a Travel Breakout The idea is to keep your skin hydrated and moisturized inflight...
May Lindstrom Skin Review: Dirt, Dew, and Damn Fine Skin (GIVEAWAY!)

May Lindstrom Skin Review: Dirt, Dew, and Damn Fine Skin (GIVEAWAY!)

I first heard about May Lindstrom and her aptly named skin care line, May Lindstrom Skin, in June of 2012. I researched the line further and was deeply impressed with May’s skin care philosophy. Her firm focus on simplicity, results, and the experience of ritual have combined to form a finely edited, high-end organic skin care range. All the products are made in small batches by May herself, using her own carefully developed formulations. Since May has extremely sensitive skin that reacts poorly to harsh ingredients and synthetics, she developed the line with sensitive types in mind. Some of the ingredients had me worried at first (with all the spices and so on) but I should have feared not. My skin positively relishes her products. “I have truly poured my heart and soul into delivering a beautiful experience with this line. I wanted to create something special — gorgeous potions that feel incredible to use and provide an excuse to celebrate yourself every morning and night. I insist on products that deliver serious results. The bottles are lovely, but what’s inside is remarkably powerful.” –May Lindstrom Obviously, I had to contact her, and it turns out May is even more awesome than I expected (and I was already expecting a high level of awesomeness). May grew up in the woods of Minnesota and began concocting skin potions (mud? water? check!) as a little girl. She is down-to-earth, genuine, and full of heart. She puts all this goodness into her products and makes a concerted effort to assist others in their skin care journey. Not only is she a delightful, kind...
MUN No. 1 Aknari Review (a.k.a. How to Get Dewy, Glowing Skin) + 10% Off

MUN No. 1 Aknari Review (a.k.a. How to Get Dewy, Glowing Skin) + 10% Off

You guys are like my family and the products I review are like the nervous boyfriend. Thus, I am very picky and don’t want to introduce just anyone to my family. I have to absolutely love it. So today, I want to introduce you to MUN. MUN No.1 Aknari — Nighttime Dream Youth Serum Review  Brightening Youth Serum Note: The serum changed names slightly in 2014. I have mentioned MUN a few times already on Instagram and as a major blemish fighter in my latest post, How to Get Rid of a Sudden Breakout. MUN is a face oil/serum created by the lovely and talented makeup artist, Munemi Imai. (Do you see where the brand got its name now? Pretty fantastic.) In March, I was sent a bottle of MUN to review and have been using it ever since. I finally ran out of my first bottle the other day, so it was about a 2 month supply for me, though admittedly I was using it on my hands and legs a lot. Under normal face use, this bottle would easily last 3 months. I just purchased my second bottle so I can continue my love affair. In fact, I will be repurchasing MUN over and over again because I refuse to be without it. MUN even came with me to Japan in my tiny quart bag, so that should tell you just how much I love this potion. That’s limited real estate right there, and one must pick their skin care wisely when under such space constraints. MUN No. 1 Aknari is a simple, yet powerfully healing blend of three rare oils...
