hello steph your blog is awessomee ! i spend wayyy mre time on it than i should
i have a couple questions,
first on is that i have some scars on my back from previous blemishes and stuff and im not really sure what to do about it.
secondly, i was wondering if there was any cheaper form of the clarisonic, like if there was a generic brand or something of that sort. im a student so it wouldnt really be wise for me to drop that much money on something like that. even 150 for the one speed version kinda seems like a lot !
also, have you tried the derma roller or know anything about it ? good bad neutral?
also, i live with my parents obviously still since im at a local college and they’re not that concerned about purchasing a water filter thingy for the shower and stuff, and doubt they will any time soon. i guess when and if i move out itll be on top of my to do list but until then what are the harms that its doing to my skin and hair ? i use a brita water filter for drinking..
im sure there was something else i wanted to ask but i cant think of them now:P
thanks a lot in advance !
Thanks, Shadwa, I’m glad you like it.
Here are your answers:
1.) Blemish scars usually take care of themselves in 3–6 months. If you don’t want to wait that long, you can apply a yogurt (organic, unsweetened, no additives) or sour cream (organic, no additives) mask to your back for 10 minutes and wash off. 10 minutes maximum, by the way. You can also try a product, such as ARCONA’s Lightening Drops. I have been testing those out on a few sun spots and it’s working very well (review to come). I’ve found that lemon and vitamin E oil also work incredibly well, but if you have tan or dark skin, use caution as it may leave a halo around the acne mark.
2.) You can try a manual brush instead of a Clarisonic for now. Search Amazon for one with good reviews.
3.) Derma roller…that’s the one with little needles on it right? If so, yes, I’ve seen that and I am not a fan. It can be beneficial for those with aging/wrinkly skin and for those with pitted acne marks, but other than that, it’s not a good idea since you’re causing intentional harm to your skin. No bueno.
4.) Your parents aren’t concerned? Holy crap. They should be. You can show them any of the hundreds of reports that city/tap water has plenty of allowed substances, not to mention chlorine, which is a basic additive to every water supply and is harmful to our eyes, hair, skin, and mucous membranes. Everyone should have a water filter, with the exception of those lucky enough to live on clean well water or on some pristine island. Brita water filters don’t do much for filtering, either. It’s a cheapo thing that can’t even filter out particulate lead.
Hope that helped!

thank you for all the suggestions ! ill definately give them a try ! ive actually noticed a change in my skin now that i’ve switched over to all natural skin care ! im slowly getting into organic food but its sometimes hard to find where i live so hopefully with more research ill be able to find a market or something !
and yeah they dont care at all they’re really not into healthy living too much
i try to advise them of all the chemicals in everything but theres only so much i can do. i checked out the website of the water filter again and i was just wondering, if i get the shower filter which is a decent price, would i be able to drink from that? LOL wierd question but i just thought i’d ask .
Hi Shadwa,
I’m really glad you’re doing well — we can only do as best we can, so at least you’re making an effort! I do not advise drinking from a shower filter, since shower filters in general do not remove all the chlorine (most only remove up to 50%). The one I recommend is the best on the market since it takes care of up to 90% of the chlorine, but you would need a sink filtration system that actually traps all (99.99%) the chlorine molecules and other VOCs more efficiently since the contact time is longer.

Hi Stephanie!
i had a quick question about what to do for a hormonal imbalance. I took the birth control pill about three years ago to regulate my cycle and when i stopped aft five months my body went crazy. I ended up not menstruating for about twenty months afterward, and now when i do it’s about every 50 days. Do you know any supplements or natural remedies/tips to help me with this. And because this is happening my skin is also really bad and i have acne everywhere:(( please help!
Thanks so much. I love your blog!
Sue
Hey Steph!
I just finished reading Dr. Bob’s drugless guide to female hormones and I wanted to say: thanks for the book tip! How scary all those synthetic foods we put into our bodies. I am almost sad for being 24 years and not having changed those things before…
Actually, I read all books you recommend (for example the one by Byron Katie). Please continue putting great recommendations!!
Many thanks for your awesome blog (I keep repeating myself
)
Stef
hey steph thanks for all your help i know you get a lot of questions so i appreciate that you take the time to answer
i finally decided after muchh research that im going to save and hopefully get the shower filter and sink filter hopefully in the next week or two. i saw a lot of good reviews on the AQUASANA and for those two units together its about a 50 dollar difference. do you think it would be okay if i got the aquasana since its cheaper? or since im spending the money anyway i might as well put in the $50 extra for EWS ? thanks a lottt !
Hi Shadwa!
Good question. No, I would not go with Aquasana because their filters are inferior quality, just like most water filtration companies. They’re cheap for a good reason.
I know if these companies saw that, they would get pissed, but it’s true and I have an obligation to be factual and adhere to my standards as far as quality and natural material goes.

Sue–I have read that Vitex–also known as chaste berry–is helpful for many women having hormonal issues due to BCP. Also, green cruciferous vegetables are supposed to help balance hormones. I know kale is a cruciferous green, although I am not exactly sure what other leafy greens would be considered cruciferous. You can take these in the green smoothies that Stephanie recommends.
Hi Jennifer,
You’re right, leafy greens and cruciferous veggies help to balance hormones by binding excess estrogen and keeping the liver in good shape so it can deactivate and remove spent hormones. Examples: broccoli, kale, brussels sprouts, cauliflower, bok choy, and collard greens. And yes, like you said, green smoothies are probably the best way to eat them aside from just being lightly steamed.

Hi Stephanie, you’ve gorgeous skin and a wonderful voice.
I am not associated with Tanaka in anyway, but the video you transcribed from mandarin is actually part of a book/DVD set that is available for sales in Asian bookstores. Just as you asked others not to distribute your e-book and it is hard to prevent privacy and copyrights, I don’t feel it is fair to Tanaka and her publisher that you are posting their material on youtube.
Sorry, just my 2 cents.
Hi Pansy,
Thanks for your comment. The video you mentioned was already available for free on YouTube and on various Asian websites, I simply made it available in English. YouTube has informed me there was no copyright infringement, since Tanaka had distributed that video for free.

Hi Steph
I’ve been reading your article on dark under-eye circles. I don’t have dark circles, just those blue veins you mentioned. My question is: Does lazer treatment really work on the blue veins or do they just come back over time?
Also, do you have any remedies for dry red patches on the skin? I have some awful patches on my chin and jaw and none of my moisturizers are helping.
Thanks,
Jordyn
Hi Jordyn,
There are some new lasers out now that take care of veins, but you would have to go to a dermatologist or plastic surgeon who is well-trained in laser therapies. My experience was that they came back after a few years.
For the dry red patches, look into your diet first and foremost. Read a few of the articles I wrote on that, and it should help. If it doesn’t help after a few weeks, check into using natural skin care products that will help rebalance your skin, such as 100% Pure, Arcona, and Skin Apotheke. As a last resort, if you keep getting skin issues and you’ve tried changing your diet and skin care, you may want to get tested for parasites and/or do a parasite cleanse, such as one from Body Force.

Your book really sounds great. Who don’t a flawless skin
But is there a chapter about allergies in it? I often experienced that I bought a book that sounded very budding and when I read it I noticed that I couldn’t test the tipps because I was allergic on most of the products that were recommended. That’s very frustrating because money for nothing
Hey Cosmo, good question. There is no specific chapter on allergies – I chose instead to mention them frequently throughout the book and when recommending products. I am allergic to several things in skin care products, including chamomile (which everyone seems to think is a great idea to add to nearly everything…ugh) and it’s also VERY important that you do your own due diligence and look at the ingredients list in the products mentioned to make sure you’re not going to have a reaction. The book is not product-centered, it is centered on diet and other lifestyle factors, which is what gives you the clear skin (products only help, they are not the magic pill).
Hope that helped!
