Wow thank you, Maureen. I'm glad you found it so informative. That's the whole reason I started EBG - to "brain dump" all this information on everyone who could use it. I was just really tired of seeing articles filled with fluff and "just cover it up with foundation" mentality. I want you to have clear skin, so if you follow the advice and ask me any questions, I'll be happy to help where I can.

Yeah, you won't read/hear that here. Look around the site, there's TONS of articles on getting rid of acne. Start at "Top Articles" on the menu.

Stephanie! You're brilliant. My family and friends will think that I'm a maniac for following your advice (they already think that I'm "obsessed", a "health freak" etc due to the measures I've recently taken to better my diet and doing more exercise) but like you said, whats difficult is looking in the mirror and feeling bad about yourself. :)
It's my body, not theirs, so I'm going to try and make it the best it can be so that I can feel happy and healthy. Thanks for helping me realise this!! The information is very simple and helpful too, thank you.

Thank you so much for your guidance Steph! Your comments about skin reactions and detox make perfect sense. I've taken your advice and have been to my GP who took blood tests and has referred me to a hormone specialist, as I've apparently got low testosterone + low binding agent - therefore free androgens, plus I tested positive for an auto-immune reaction/disease. I'm going to chat with the specialist about going off the pill as you've recommended - and thanks for the heads-up on people's individual responses to this. Your site is a wonderful reference resource for holistic living, and I've adopted many of your recommendations. Thank you again. Rachael

Hi Rachael,

Thank you for the comment. :) You have a lot of factors here that are causing your hormones to become off-balance. Being on the pill causes you to have a constant supply of artificial hormones, so introducing foods or supplements that have a rebalancing effect are not going to work like they would if you weren't on the pill. It's hard for me to give advice on this because of the pill factor. You may want to try a different kefir or using a different milk, like goat milk.

One thing to note, however, is that I do not agree with the hippy-type theory of detoxification. Detox reactions are brief (a.k.a. a few days) and people confuse ongoing sickness and skin disorders with a "detox" symptom when in reality it's your body telling you to knock it off due to an allergy, intolerance, deficiency, overdose, etc.

You could also talk to your physician and see if it's suitable for you to go off the pill in order to get your body back on track. Just be forewarned that after going of the pill, rebalancing your hormones may not take very long, or it may take a year or more, depending on your situation and body.

Thank you! This information is most helpful and motivating. I'm now in my early 40s and swapped to natural skincare about a year ago. I have just started taking kefir - for about 6 weeks now; am making it myself with grains and full cream Devondale UHT milk. I had acne (moderate) in my teens and breakouts here and there all through my life, but since taking kefir, it's been really bad - you know those big awful swellings (t-zone and chin especially). I'm trying to make up my mind whether I'm detoxing from the kefir, or am allergic - or, if it's re-balancing my hormones (I'm also on the pill and interestingly during menstruation [since taking kefir], my skin clears up!). I was drinking about 500ml of kefir a day and have reduced now to 1 cup/day. Any advice would be sincerely appreciated.

Hi Mya,

No problem. When I buy yogurt or kefir, I stick with those made with goat or sheep milk (not sure of the brand), though Lifeway and Helios are pretty good even though they're made with cow's milk. It's just my personal preference. I never go with anything lowfat or non-fat. Fat is nothing to be afraid of as long as you're eating healthy and avoiding excess caloric intake in general. I don't eat beans or legumes except for peanut butter (organic, no added oil or sugar). I do not eat corn often, but I will have it in tortilla form. I don't like avocados and am allergic to latex, so yes, I avoid them. For lower sugar fruits, the best are berries, cherries, lemons, limes, tomato, fresh figs, papaya, and melons. Dark chocolate is fine, just look for an organic variety made without dairy. ~Steph x

I found your article extremely helpful, thank you for posting! I have a couple of questions regarding your diet in relation to acne that I was hoping you could clarify:

What brand of yogurt/kefir do you buy, and what fat percentages are ideal?
Do you eat any beans or legumes?
Do you avoid corn?
Do you avoid avocados?
Which lower sugar fruits do you recommend?
Is dark chocolate (70%+) to be avoided?

Thank you for posting your experience, it is extremely helpful!
